Open AVIF images on Windows
AVIF is a small, high-quality picture format built on the AV1 video codec, and more and more websites use it. SeeAnyFile opens AVIF through Windows’ own AV1 codec and turns it into a JPG or PNG anyone can open.
How to open it, step by step
- Install SeeAnyFile. It is free for Windows 10 and 11 and needs no account.
- Open the AVIF file: double-click it, drag it onto the window, or use Open with › SeeAnyFile.
- If this PC has no AV1 codec, SeeAnyFile says so and names it: install “AV1 Video Extension” from the Microsoft Store and start SeeAnyFile again.
- Press Ctrl+E to save it as JPG, PNG or WebP, or Ctrl+B to convert a folder of AVIF files in one go.
What you can do with it
- View a folder of AVIF pictures with thumbnails and the arrow keys.
- Crop, resize and edit, then save as JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP or TIFF.
- Compare two pictures side by side with one shared zoom.
- Remove the background or copy text out of the picture, on your PC.
Good to know
- SeeAnyFile reads AVIF but does not write it; saved copies use one of the five export formats.
- The AV1 codec comes from Microsoft, not from SeeAnyFile. The app looks for it each time it starts.
Questions
Where do AVIF files come from?
Mostly from the web: many sites serve pictures as AVIF because the files are much smaller than JPEG at the same quality. Saving such a picture often gives you an .avif file.
Why won’t my AVIF file open?
Windows needs the AV1 Video Extension to decode AVIF. SeeAnyFile recognises the file and tells you to install it from the Microsoft Store.
Is transparency kept when I convert?
Save as PNG or WebP to keep transparent areas. JPEG cannot store transparency, and SeeAnyFile warns you before it fills them in.
