Open EXR and HDR images on Windows
OpenEXR renders and Radiance HDR images open directly, tone-mapped for your screen, with an exposure control to look into the highlights and the shadows.
How to open it, step by step
- Install SeeAnyFile. It is free for Windows 10 and 11 and needs no account.
- Double-click the .exr or .hdr file, or drag it onto the window.
- Press Alt+] to brighten and Alt+[ to darken; Alt+\ puts the exposure back.
- Press Ctrl+E to save a PNG, JPG or TIFF to share.
What you can do with it
- Look through a folder of renders with thumbnails.
- Open HDR TIFF, PQ and HLG pictures and Ultra HDR photos the same way.
- Compare two renders side by side with one shared zoom.
- Check colours with the eyedropper (P) and the histogram in the info panel (I).
Good to know
- EXR and HDR are read by SeeAnyFile’s own engine; no plug-in is needed.
- Saving writes a new file; the original render is never changed.
Questions
Why does my EXR look too dark or too bright?
HDR images hold more light than a screen can show. Use Alt+[ and Alt+] to move the exposure and see the detail at either end.
Which HDR formats open?
OpenEXR (.exr), Radiance (.hdr, .rgbe, .pic), floating-point TIFF, PQ and HLG pictures and Ultra HDR JPEGs.
