Open JPEG XL (.jxl) files on Windows
JPEG XL is the successor to JPEG, with smaller files and lossless and HDR options. Windows cannot show it out of the box. SeeAnyFile reads it with its own built-in decoder, so there is nothing else to install.
How to open it, step by step
- Install SeeAnyFile. It is free for Windows 10 and 11 and needs no account.
- Double-click the .jxl file or drag it onto the window.
- Press Ctrl+E and choose JPG, PNG or WebP to make a copy any program opens.
- Press Ctrl+B to convert a whole folder of JPEG XL files.

Good to know
- An animated JPEG XL shows its first frame.
- CMYK JPEG XL files are declined with a clear message rather than shown in the wrong colours. SeeAnyFile reads JXL but does not write it.

Can I convert JXL to JPG?
Yes. Open the file, press Ctrl+E and choose JPG, or convert a folder with Ctrl+B.
