Turn Word and Excel files into PDFs

Make PDFs from .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files without opening each one and printing it to PDF. SeeAnyFile uses Microsoft Office or LibreOffice when they are on your PC, so the PDF looks like the original, and has its own converter for when neither is.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Open the document in SeeAnyFile, or select several documents in File Explorer.
  2. Click Save as PDF on the toolbar, run Documents to PDF from the command palette (Ctrl+K), or right-click in File Explorer and choose SeeAnyFile › Make PDF.
  3. Check the program the dialog suggests (Microsoft Office first, then LibreOffice, then the built-in converter) or pick another one.
  4. Click Save as PDF. Several files are one job that you can pause, and each file reports its result.
  5. Open the new PDF from the list. It sits beside the original, which is never changed.

What you can do with it

  • Convert Word (.docx, .doc), Excel (.xlsx, .xls), PowerPoint (.pptx, .ppt), OpenDocument and RTF files.
  • If one program gives up on a file, the next is tried, and the result says which one made the PDF.
  • With the built-in converter: one page per slide or sheet, wide sheets turned sideways, and table headers repeated on every page.
  • A conversion that hangs is ended by a time limit, so one file never blocks the rest.

Where your file goes

Everything runs on your PC; nothing is uploaded. Office and LibreOffice work on a private copy with macros switched off, and only a process SeeAnyFile started is ever closed, so a Word or Excel window you have open is left alone.

Good to know

  • The built-in converter carries the text and tables in order, not the original fonts, colours, layout or pictures. Install Office or LibreOffice for an exact copy.
  • If PowerPoint is already open, SeeAnyFile leaves it alone and asks you to close it first.
  • A password-protected document is found before the conversion starts.

Questions

Is this different from Print to PDF?

With Office installed the PDF looks the same, but you can convert many files at once from one dialog, and you still get a PDF on a PC with no Office at all.

Do I need Microsoft Office?

No. For .docx, .xlsx and .pptx the built-in converter always works. Office or LibreOffice keep the exact look.

Are my documents uploaded?

No. The conversion happens on your PC, and the PDF is written next to the original.
